Introduction
- Personal: Who is your hero?
- Our culture feasts upon so – called “heroes”.
- Our cultural elitist finds fun in bashing into bobble heads men who made real selfless sacrifices. Nathan Hale Breakpoint July 24, 2015
- Isaiah lamented the lack of heroes in his day (Isaiah 5:18-23)
- The elders have assigned me the responsibility to look at Bible Heroes:
- Background for this search: Hebrews 10:32-39
Outline
- Hero Gallery – Hebrews 11 A list of ancestors that persevered by faith.
- Abel (Hebrews 11:4) “By faith Abel offered God”
- Enoch (Hebrews 11:5) “By faith Enoch was taken from this life,”
- (Hebrews 11:6) Who is the rewarder? “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly (diligently) seek him.”
- Noah (Hebrews 11:7) “By faith Noah”, (2 Peter 2:5)
- Abraham (Hebrews 11:8-10, 16, 17-19) “By faith Abraham,”
- Jacob (Hebrews 11:21) “By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.” (Genesis 48:15,16,21)
- Joseph (Hebrews 11:22) “By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions about his bones.” (Genesis 39:1-23; 50:20)
- A Super Hero Rescues His People
- Moses (Hebrews 11:23-29)
- Who was the Slave Redeemer?
- Who was the rescuing hero of the Israelites in Egypt?
- Genesis 15:13-14
- Exodus 6:1-6
- Who is the Super Hero You Most Want to Please?
- We definitely want to please this Super Hero. (Hebrews 11:6)
- If we choose not to please Him, (Jeremiah 21:5)
- God’s hand and arm are powerful: For or against us. We choose.
- It is not the person that initially recognizes, acknowledges, confesses and obeys the great Super Hero of the whole universe that receives the offered reward. It is the one who endures. “diligently seek”
- The one in whom our confidence should reside is God (Hebrews 10:35)
- What we need is endurance to wait for and trust the real hero – God.
- Hebrews 10:35-39
- It is not enough to start well by being baptized. It is imperative that we “finish well.”
- Next time we look at Heroes – let’s look at the one who finishes very well.
- We definitely want to please this Super Hero. (Hebrews 11:6)
- Conclusion: Why some don’t finish well. (1 Corinthians 10:1-13)
